Well...it gets pasty but doesn't cut any more.
Remember to use lots of water with the 2000 grit...That stuff will last a long time on that aluminum

i would try and avoid the 200grit paper you mentioned
you will never get to all of it...
Just polish compound ....... You could try and find very fine steel wool i think it is rated OOOO.. Then hit it with buffing wheels...
Speaking of which I gotta talk with Chris...I am bringing a angle grinder that accepts buffing pads... 
Heck thinking about it toss on a set Spike rims from Spank and a Thompson polished seat post and then your really blinging it.
Yeah now if that bike had that polished BoXXer and the new XO or RO brakes it would really stand out...
